Category Rules

CLASSIFICATION​

NOVICE­ 
2 hours of training or less per week

PRE­COMPETITIVE­
5 hours of training or less per week

COMPETITIVE­
6 hours of training or more per week

ACCELERATED
All dancers over 11 hours a week of training will be marked as accelerated. If more than 50% of dancers in a group are over 11 hours of training, the group will be marked as accelerated.

AGE DIVISION

Age division is calculated by adding all ages, dividing by the number of performers, and dropping all decimals.

PETITE (7 AND UNDER)

MINI (8–­9)

JUNIOR (10­11)

INTERMEDIATE (12–­13)

TEEN (14­-15)

SENIOR (16 AND OVER)

PROFESSIONAL/OPEN (19­-21)

ADULT­ (22 & Over) Any routine which consists of non teaching adults.

OPEN­ Any routine with a teacher

(All ADULT AND OPEN LEVEL routines are ineligible for Top Studio Awards, TO THE BEAT SHOWDOWN, High Score Awards)

PERFORMANCE STYLE

BALLET: Classical ballet. Ballet shoes required. Acro tricks are not permitted.

CHARACTER BALLET: Ballet style, portraying a character through choreography, costume and storytelling.

POINTE: Ballet pointe techniques. Pointe shoes are required. ROSIN PERMITTED

JAZZ: Traditional jazz techniques and performance. NO MORE THAN 4 ACRO TRICKS OR TUMBLING LINES.

LYRICAL: Combination of Ballet and Jazz techniques. An interpretation of lyrics and the ability to tell a story through dance. NO MORE THAN 4 ACRO TRICKS OR TUMBLING LINES.

ETHNIC: A traditional/ cultural demonstration of technique. ex. highland, Ukrainian, Irish. CONTEMPORARY: Incorporation of lyrical and jazz technique. NO MORE THAN 4 ACRO TRICKS OR TUMBLING LINES.

MODERN: Interpretive movements using contemporary/modern technique.

TAP: Tap technique using rhythms. Pre­recorded Tap sounds will not be permitted. Tap shoes required.

MUSICAL THEATRE: Form of dance combining lip syncing and dance.

SONG & DANCE: Live singing required with dance choreography. No microphones. Live piano is allowed but not supplied.

ACRO: Combination of gymnastics and dance choreography. 50% should be acro skills.

HIP HOP: street style movement. Acro and break dancing are permitted.

OPEN: Any dance style or a combination of dance styles.

PRODUCTION: There is no age division for Production entries. Consists of any dance style. Entry must portray a theme or story line throughout the performance. A maximum of 5 minutes is allocated to set up. Please contact TO THE BEAT DANCE CHALLENGE prior to competition if props are involved.

INTERPRETIVE JAZZ / CONTEMPORARY SOLO: Dancers will come out on stage one at a time and have 1 minute to showcase their performance and overall dance ability in the jazz category. Music will be chosen by TO THE BEAT DANCE CHALLENGE.

*Acro and Productions are allowed unlimited acrobatic tricks

Any routine that exceeds the Acrobatic Trick Limits will be deducted 1 mark per judge. A total of 3 marks.


General Rules

ALL ENTRIES AND FEES MUST BE RECEIVED IN FULL PAYMENT BY FRIDAY JANUARY 13TH 2017.

Early Bird discount for all fees and entries is FRIDAY NOVEMBER 25TH 2020. (See registration form)

Space is limited and studios are accepted on a first come first serve basis.

TO THE BEAT DANCE CHALLENGE reserves the right to cancel any competition.

TO THE BEAT DANCE CHALLENGE reserves the right to add an additional day to the stated 2020 tour dates if deemed necessary.

Any changes made to entries after the FINALIZED SCHEDULE has been sent out is subject to a $5.00 fee per change.

House Rules

Photography and videography is prohibited in the theatre. 2TB STAFF have the right to confiscate or delete any videos and photos taken of a performance. We will have video and photography on locations for all customers.

All judging results are a final decision.

Any harassment or negative behavior will result in immediate disqualification of the individual and/or studio. no refund will be given.

Food & Drinks are not permitted in the theater.

Parents are not permitted in the backstage area during the competition, teachers have the authority to ask parents to help with props and or emergencies.

DIAMOND

90 and above

RUBY

85 – 89.9

EMERALD

80 – 84.9

SAPPHIRE

75 – 79.9

Ties will be permitted.

Special awards can be awarded to contestants that won 1st-3rd.

Top titles and scholarships will be presented at the end of competitions.

Time Limits

Solos, Duets/Trios: Maximum of 3 minutes.

Small Groups: Maximum of 3 minutes.

Large Groups: Maximum of 4 minutes.

Extended Lines: Maximum of 5 minutes.

Production: Maximum of 10 minutes.

Time Limits include entrances and exits. The studio will be fined $40.00 per entry if the time limit is exceeded.

Payment

We accept  use an online registration system that accepts CREDIT CARD payments. For non-profit studios, we also accept E-TRANSFER.

NSF FEE of $35.00 will be charged for all NSF cheques.

Registration fees are non-refundable for any reason.
